Reducing Bycatch Helps Restore Sea Turtle Populations
Sea Turtle Quick Facts!
- All seven species of sea turtle are considered threatened or endangered. All species present in the United States
are protected by the Endangered Species Act
- It is estimated that only one out of 1,000 hactlins survives to be an adult. Young hatchlings are easy prey for their
natural predators such as birds, crabs, fish, and mammals like racoons.
- The temperature of the sand at sea turtle nesting sites is very important as it determines the sex of the sea turtle offspring.
Cooler incubation temperatures produce male hatchings while warmer temperatures produce females hatchings.
- Sea turtles return to nest at the same beaches where they hatched
